When the FBI Seeks Extradition…®
EXTRADITION TREATY LAW AND PROCEDURE
Place of Surrender
Surrender technically occurs at the place of commitment. In practice, however, the extraditee is committed to the custody of the Attorney General, and not to a specific prison or detention facility. Customarily, U.S. Marshals will transport the extraditee to an international airport for a direct flight to the country requesting extradition. Transfer of custody occurs at the door of the airplane selected to transport the extraditee out of the United States. Occasionally, at the expense of the requesting country, U.S. Marshals will and handle all aspects of transportation to that country.
